The Battle of Dutch Harbor
In an attempt to distract US forces, Japan sent a small strike force to Dutch harbor to commence a bombing raid and lure US forces to the Aleutian Islands. The raid took place on June 3rd, 1942, one day before the Battle of Midway. During the raid, 42 people were killed and 50 were injured. The hospital on the Dutch Harbor side of Unalaska Island, Alaska was also destroyed. The diversion did not work, as Admiral Chester W. Nimitz had made the decision, with information from US codebreakers about the Japanese plans from the Battle of Midway, to keep the fleet ready for battle at Midway Island.
