On December 7, 1941, at 7:55 A.M., the Japanese attacked pearl harbor and brought the U.S. in to World War II. The Japanese were in dire need for oil. They had only six percent of their usual incoming oil. So, they needed to recapture their main imports. However, the Japanese thought striking south into British Malaya and the Dutch East Indies would anger the U.S. into war. So, they struck the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, hoping the attack would end with a peace negotiation between the U.S. and Japan,
"No man can tame a tiger into a kitten by stroking it. There can be no appeasement with ruthlessness. There can be no reasoning with an incendiary bomb."
- Franklin D. Roosevelet
The attack sank the USS Arizona (BB-39), USS Oklahoma (BB-37), USS West Virginia (BB-48), USS California (BB-44), and the target ship USS Utah (AG-16). The USS Cassin and USS Downs were destroyed by incidiaries while on land. Little did they know, this greatly enraged the U.S. making the U.S. prepare for war against Japan.
